I saw a documentary recently where one of the guests ended the program by explaining that our current society is seeing a war being fought between democracy and capitalism, and it seemed as though democracy was definitely losing out at this point in history.
The following article is an elaboration on that theme. Although quite militant in its style, it seems to hit the nail right on the head when it comes to analysing the relationship between politics and money. Think about it: all the major lobby groups in washington are working for the big corporations that are pushing for policies that will ultimately increase their profits. They're not looking for policies that will increase the standard of living of the population. They are not concerned with the public. Only with their profit and loss accounts.
When you see this, you start to understand the nature of our problems.

In fact, it is a voracious predatory crime syndicate devoid of conscience that creates perpetual war while simultaneously pilfering the public treasury. It remains in power only through the collusion of its obedient servant, the commercial media and a disengaged public.

Capital is particularly onerous in that it socializes costs but privatizes profits—an especially insidious form of corporate welfare that is inherently unjust. Long ago the corporate government and the commercial media conspired to create a propaganda empire without equal that keeps the people ignorant and inundated with superfluous lies. Virtually all other industrialized nations have socialized medicine and free higher education for those who seek it. But in America our wealth is plundered in wasteful and repressive militarism, massive corporate welfare and tax cuts for the wealthy."
