1984, here we come....
Sometimes I just despair of what the fascists are doing to America and think 'what the hell am I writing all this stuff for on this blog? It doesn't make any difference anyway. I mean, even if you alert the whole of America to the measures that they're introducing into American law, it still wouldn't matter, they'll still pass all those orwellian laws to change the country into a police state. Hell, it's already happened. 14 of the 16 provisions of the Patriot Act have now been extended into permanent laws. So much for the sunset provisions that stated that these were temporary measures. Now it looks as though that was never their intention. They just needed an excuse to introduce the measures in the first place and later on they would make them all permanent while nobody was looking, or use the latest bombing in another country to convince the public that these measures are now for their permanent protection.
And what about this new drug law that they want to pass? According to the text, if you hear of someone buying a joint, you are compelled by law to report this fact within 24 hours, otherwise you can be arrested yourself and sent to jail.
It doesn't matter whether you support Bush or not, your first priority needs to be to your civil liberties.
In a country that loudly claims to be the bastion of freedom and democracy, the politicians seem to be feverishly busy trying to confiscate all those freedoms in order to turn the country into a real police state.
I remember all the conspiracy theories doing the rounds all those years ago stating that there was an evil elite running the show right at the top that has a secret plan to gradually turn the United States into a modern-day version of Orwell's 1984. Yeah right, we all thought, those are just crazy paranoid conspiracy theorists. Don't listen to them, they're just completely removed from all reality. That kind of stuff could never happen here.
Yeah right.
